Etihad Airways has embarked on an Economy Class Conversion program by refurbishing 23 narrow-body Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft. The interior refurbishment, including a new personalized wireless entertainment system available on smartphones and tablets, is scheduled for completion in August this year. As part of an ambitious program to improve onboard catering, the airline is also introducing a new and improved concept of free economy class meals on all flights.

WHAT EXACTLY WILL CHANGE?
The modern, refurbished salons contain ergonomic chairs of the British brand Acro, the world innovation leader in the production of aviation seats. The state-of-the-art chairs offer increased comfort for the knees, accommodate your own mobile devices, and have USB ports for fast charging and adjustable holders for your phone and tablet. Passengers will also have access to 300 hours of entertainment directly from their mobile devices via a browser thanks to the Etihad Panasonic eXW on-board system. A more extensive entertainment program, including a wide selection of Hollywood blockbusters, international films and the best TV series produced by HBO and Universal, is available in the new E-BOX STREAM app for download before your flight.
The in-flight entertainment system, accessible from the front seat screens, will remain in economy class cabins on wide-body Airbus and Boeing aircraft. A new economy class catering concept has been developed. Etihad Airways has launched an updated concept of free in-flight catering for all destinations. On flights longer than three hours, the portion of the main course has become larger. Dishes are prepared in a contemporary bistro style with an emphasis on fresh seasonal ingredients and regional flair. The plate has a new triangular shape and is made from recycled materials. The new cutlery is 85% lighter, thus reducing aircraft weight and thus fuel consumption.
The airline plans to reduce the use of plastic lids and other containers by 27 million items annually, supporting the movement to protect the environment and reduce the volume of disposable plastic tableware by 80 percent by 2022. As part of the new catering concept, guests will be offered delicious desserts that are served along with coffee and tea after the main course, which will reduce the number of dishes on the tray during serving.
On short flights, desserts will be served along with the main course. In addition to this, the menu of snacks and drinks “Sweet or Salty”, which can be purchased on board, has been significantly expanded: tapas, hot dishes, sweet and salty snacks of high quality. There are also separate options for children. The expanded range will include leading brands such as Bateel, Starbucks, Thorntons, Cawston Press, Heavenly, Perrier and Barebells. In addition, Etihad Airways will offer new blankets, pillows and disposable headrests on board.
