Top 10 Movies For Christmas And New Year

Are you tired of Home Alone and Irony of Fate? Want to see something less traditional during the holidays? U.S. too! We have prepared a selection of 10 non-trivial and, perhaps, not the most standard New Year and Christmas films.

Director: John McTiernan. 1988 year

Lieutenant John McClain visits his wife at Christmas, who works in a Los Angeles skyscraper. But the terrorists, whose leader is taking the detective’s wife hostage, decided to visit the same place. Therefore, for the next two hours of screen time, the main character will have to crawl through pipes, run barefoot on broken glass and shoot a lot. In general, do everything to save your wife and other hostages.

The adventures of the immortal detective McClane, played by Bruce Willis, are good for everyone: the charismatic protagonist, no less charismatic villain played by Alan Rickman, excellent action, and most importantly, the events unfold just on Christmas Eve. That is why, in 2015, Entertainment Weekly named the picture the perfect movie for a Christmas night.

“Christmas story”

Director: Robert Zemeckis. 2009 r.

For Europe and the United States, “Christmas Story” has long become a well-known classic (much more familiar than even our “Irony of Fate”). However, in our area, this story is not familiar to everyone.

The plot of the animated film (it was created using motion capture technology) is a cautionary tale about an old and bitter mean Ebenezer Scrooge, who despises absolutely everything except money. However, on Christmas night, he will face a test that will completely change his outlook on life and what is truly valuable in it.

This is far from the first screen version of the famous story by Charles Dickens, but, perhaps, animation is most suitable for the modern viewer. Zemeckis, starring Jim Carrey, Gary Oldman and Colin Firth.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Director: Andrew Adamson. 2005 year

The Second World War. After another bombing of London, parents send four children to the village to an old professor – a family friend. In his house, children find a mysterious wardrobe, looking into which, they discover the way to the fabulous country of Narnia, where not only people live, but also fantastic animals and fabulous creatures.

However, they quickly realize that this peaceful country is under the rule of an evil Sorceress, because of which eternal winter reigns there. Children must help King Aslan, who created Narnia many centuries ago, defeat the Sorceress, destroy spells and free the inhabitants of Narnia.

The film is an adaptation of the first book from the series by Clive Staples Lewis, friend and colleague of the legendary John R.R. Tolkien. And although the story written by Lewis did not receive such worldwide fame as The Lord of the Rings, the much lighter and more fabulous film adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia is more suitable for the New Year holidays than the hours-long and dramatic film adaptation of Tolkien’s epic. However, if you are not afraid to spend a little more than nine hours of your time on the trilogy, which received 17 Oscars, then The Lord of the Rings will be an excellent choice for the holidays.

Ghostbusters 2

Director: Ivan Reitman. 1989 year

The first part of “Ghostbusters” was also the first summer blockbuster in history: a film that audiences go to just to relax, distract themselves and laugh. In this regard, the sequel is a worthy successor, but this time the plot unfolds on the eve of the winter holidays.

Needless to say, the film does not intend to scare the viewer at all, since it is a great Christmas story with plenty of comedy scenes.

“Come and see me”

Directors: Oleg Yankovsky, Mikhail Agranovich. 2000 year

For many years Sofya Ivanovna does not get up from her chair, while her only daughter Tanya seems to have resigned herself to the fact that her whole life is caring for her sick mother. But one evening, shortly before the New Year, a stranger appears on the threshold of their apartment. From that moment on, the life of the family is slowly but surely turned upside down.

The film manages to combine both the dramatic and the comedic components, successfully complemented by the first-class acting of Oleg Yankovsky, Irina Kupchenko and Ekaterina Vasilyeva, who played the main roles. This means that both lovers of Soviet cinema and those who prefer the genre of American romantic comedies will be satisfied.

Bridget Jones Diary

Directed by: Sharon Maguire. 2001

This is not to say that “The Diary of Bridget Jones” belongs to the category of films that are immediately and unequivocally associated with Christmas. However, the story that this movie tells begins on the eve of a holiday that Bridget intends to spend at her parents’ house. There she will meet Mark Darcy, an already divorced man, to whom at first the girl did not pay attention. Why? She faces much more important and global tasks, namely, to lose weight, quit smoking and find a suitable man for her.

Bridget Jones’s Diary is a reference example of Hollywood romantic comedy. However, in recent years, the film has gradually moved into the category of “well-forgotten classics”. So the New Year holidays are a great occasion to refresh this story in memory. Or get to know her and find out how Bridget intends to achieve her goals.

“Peculiarities of national hunting in winter”

Director: Alexander Rogozhkin. 2000 year

General Ivolgin, together with his comrades – the huntsman Kuzmich and the policeman Lyova – again decides to rest on the cordon near the border with Finland. However, a sudden ministerial check intervenes in their plans, in which there is a strict lady from the Ministry of Ecology, a principled opponent of hunting and noisy feasts, as well as her assistant, completely obeying the will of her powerful boss. However, the lull will end, as soon as the heroes go on the first hunt, which will entail a whole series of absurd situations.

The third part of the adventures of General Ivolgin, although somewhat secondary in relation to “Peculiarities of National Hunting” and “Peculiarities of National Fishing”, is still an excellent continuation and one of the main examples of the genre of Russian comedies of the late 1990s – early 2000s. years. In addition, this is the only film in the series, which takes place in winter, on the eve of New Year’s holidays.

Groundhog Day

Director: Harold Ramis. 1993

Weather presenter Phil Connors travels to the same Pennsylvania town every year for Groundhog Day. These trips he is already pretty tired of and the only thing he wants is to leave this town. However, this time the time itself decided to play against him, which took and stopped at one date – February 2.

Now Phil has to make a choice – to calm down and enjoy a measured, but completely devoid of future life, or by all means try to break out of this time loop.

Groundhog Day is not only a great New Year’s comedy, but also a film that says that you can get out of almost any impasse, you just need to understand what needs to be changed in yourself.

“Hotel” Grand Budapest “

Directed by: Wes Anderson. 2014

In the detective comedy by American director Wes Anderson, The Grand Budapest Hotel, there will be two main characters: the gallant concierge-alphonse Monsieur Gustav played by Rafe Fiennes, and his friend and assistant Mustafa Zero, played by the young American actor Tony Revolori. Together they will have to go through a difficult struggle for the inheritance of the elderly Madame D (Tilda Swinton), a regular guest of the hotel and a longtime friend of Monsieur Gustave. At the same time, all the action takes place against the background of winter landscapes of Zubrovka, lost in the Alps. The ironic humor, the impressive cast and the atmospheric soundtrack make the film a great tool for creating a New Year’s mood.

However, if you are accustomed to the snowless December, which has become so traditional for Belarus, then other films by Anderson – “Kingdom of the Full Moon” or “Water World” will suit you. Humor and a mesmerizing picture are, perhaps, the main distinguishing features of the director’s work.

Director: John Dante. 1984 year

A 1984 Christmas tale about cute fluffy animals, which quickly turns into a light horror, just pour water on the animals or feed them after midnight. This movie will be a great choice for both New Year’s and Halloween. Unless you’re afraid of spending the next few nights awake, of course.

By the way, the script for the film was written by Chris Columbus, who, almost 16 years later, will shoot the first three parts of Harry Potter. The very ones that are deservedly considered the best in the entire series.
